The mighty Ganga offers exciting whitewater rafting opportunities to thrill the beginner and the hardcore adventurer, alike. The rivers Alakananda & Bhagirathi are the main tributaries of the Ganga that tumble down and meet at Devprayag, frothing and straining from their racy descent down the steep mountains. The rapids here are easily Grade-IV & V, challenging the seasoned expert to survive the thrill. Down river from Devprayag, the Ganga changes into a pool drop river. This stretch of almost 70 kms., offers the amateur and the novice some fineGrade-III rapids and two Grade-IV rapids viz., “the Wall” at Byasi and the 'Golf Course', located 4 kms., below Shivpuri village, each followed by deep, placid pools. Sandy beaches line the river at intervals, allowing river rafters to pull up alongside. The slopes on either side are covered with oak, pine, spruce and fir, with the occasional village and its terraced fields dotting the landscape. Wildlife is easily sighted here. Spotted deer, monkeys and leopard may be seen scurrying away in the distance from time-to-time, while multi-hued butterflies flit among the brightly-colored flowers that dot the verdant hillsides.
